Continuing my endeavors to make my car look less shitty, I have moved on to the interior trim. It was "installed" by the previous owner, and it was yellowed by his smoking. It's a stick-on kit, seems to be firmly attached, and everything lines up correctly. I'd really like to get rid of it, but underneath the black trim around the radio looks like it might be in slightly rough shape, and I'm worried that just pulling it off may damage the paint/surface of the OEM trim.

I think I'm going to try pulling off this trim around the shift knob and using some fine-grit sandpaper to remove the yellowing and see how shitty it looks after that, but I'm open to other ideas.

Also, a couple more pics for your, uh, "enjoyment":

You might be able to get it to come off cleanly if you use some heat. Try blowing a hair dryer on the highest setting at that shifter trim piece, and the adhesive might cooperate.

Not a bad idea. Once I figure out where we keep our hair dryers, I'll have to try that. I think the shifter trim will come off on its own, but it should give me a good idea of how well it'll work for the rest of the car.

I'm guessing that guy was smoking, like, two packs a day.

Actually, the smell came out pretty easily. Got some high-quality carpet shampoo, leather cleaner, vinyl/plastic cleaner, and went over the whole interior the day after I bought it. Boom, smell gone. I think it has more to do with the trim being a cheap-as-balls sub-Pep Boys stick on kit.

If something is left behind, try 3Ms adhesive remover it works really well.

Be careful, go slow, and use one of these:

So far, this is going swimmingly. The adhesive is staying with the plastic well, and when it doesn't, it comes off in large, easy to remove chunks, and it's not leaving any real residue.

Find in your house:

Hair Dryer,

Fishing line

2-3 bottles of Goo Gone

A crap load of paper towels

Man, I wish... as for the why, he probably saw a 337/20th anniversary GTI, which came with proper, factory-installed aluminum trim, thought "that looks nice" and bought the cheapest thing he could find claiming to be aluminum trim.

If you can, remove the trim piece first so you dont risk damaging your surrounding surfaces. Plus if you eff the piece up, worst case you just need to buy another one.

As MSATLAS has said, a hair dryer on a high heat setting (but keep it moving, you don't want it damaging the surrounding plastics) and gently tease it off. For the remaining glue, use a tar and glue remover.
